Hold it by the crown, never the root, rinse it gently in milk or saline if dirty, and if possible reposition it in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and come in immediately — the first hour matters enormously.
Broken teeth, lost fillings and crowns that have come off are less urgent but still worth prompt attention, because exposed dentine is vulnerable to rapid decay and fracture.

My tooth has been knocked out — what should I do right now?
Hold it by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline — do not scrub it. If you can, place it back in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. Otherwise keep it in milk and come in immediately. The first hour is critical to saving it.
Will painkillers be enough until my appointment?
They can control symptoms briefly, but they do not treat the underlying infection, which continues to progress. Antibiotics alone are also not a cure for a dead pulp. Definitive treatment is what actually resolves it.
